Toy Story Action Figures! The very word makes a kid's heart swell with excitement. Even for adults, these collectible figures are fun to collect and display in your car for a whimsical look or in a place that tells your visitors that you're a fun kid at heart.

For a bit of interesting history about Toy Story action figures: Thinkway Toys was the only toy company back in February 1995 who was willing to take on the Toy Story license because the run-up time between the negotiations and the film's release was too short for other, larger manufacturers. The small toy company Thinkway took a gamble and it paid of handsomely and their toys have the reputation for having the greatest film accuracy. So keep a look out for that brand, although don't discount other brands if they are highly rated.

Rex the Dinosaur Action Figures

Unfortunately, most of the Rex Toy Story action figures available are not rated very highly. They either break easily or they do not resemble the Toy Story character. There are a few that earn high ratings, but then they are collectors editions and therefore very expensive. Most have mixed reviews at 3 stars, but are reasonably priced. Let's start with the one that is the most reasonably priced with the highest rating.

Toy Story 3 Rex the Dinosaur

This Rex by Thinkway looks just like the Toy Story character; many of the Rex figures aren't tall enough, but this Rex stands at 11 inches, which is more movie accurate. He has other features that are movie accurate as well, such as his facial expression and hand gestures. Rex has poseable arms, legs and neck.

Toy Story 3 Rex the Dinosaur (pictured at right) has a 4½-star rating by happy customers who report that this toy is quite durable and more than met expectations for quality. While the tail must be attached it doesn't have a problem coming off unless it's twisted and you try hard. You can always use a bit of glue to secure it completely. Toy Story 3 Deluxe Rex Collectible Figure

Then you have the Toy Story 3 Deluxe Rex Collectible Figure by Mattel, and while this one is a little less expensive, it is highly detailed and may increase in value over time, since it is considered a collectible figure. However it only got a 3-star rating by owners. The reason it got only 3 stars is because this Toy Story action figure is only 8 inches tall, which is considered way too small to accurately resemble the original movie character. However, if this isn't a problem it looks like a really nice toy and it can be bought here.

Imaginext Disney / Pixar Toy Story 3 Walking Rex

Want to get interactive with Rex? Check out the Toy Story 3 Walking Rex by Imaginext. This Rex is about 12 inches long and 7½ inches tall. Push the button on Rex's back to make him walk with stomping sounds and then say different phrases from the movie. The minimum age for this toy is 3 years old, and it requires batteries.

Reviews across the web give this Toy Story Rex a 4-star rating because kids love this toy and while it's a bit loud, it is not scary. Imaginext makes some good quality toys as well and this one is no exception. When ordering this interactive Walking Rex use this link.

Hamm and Evil Dr. Porkchop

The Hamm figures out there are either plush or have mixed ratings. We're going to stick with the non-plush figures, although the plush Hamm toys are irresistibly cute.

Disney Toy Story Hamm Piggy Bank Action Figure

How can a piggy bank be a Toy Story action figure, you might wonder. Well this Toy Story Hamm Piggy Bank can move his head, just like in the movies, and he has a removable cork in his belly plus some pretend coins to put inside. He has the same nose and eye expression as in the movie and his feet are also film accurate; Hamm is really cute!

The reviews across the web have given high ratings for this toy that functions as a real bank. Encourage your child to put real coins in this piggy bank and teach the value of savings.

Hamm is fun to play with, too, and parents write in to say that their kids play with him for months and months after they first purchase it. Toy Story 3 Coin Launching Evil Dr. Porkchop

Here is Hamm's imaginary persona when Andy plays with him, Evil Dr. Porkchop This character is wearing his black bowler hat and has a scowl on his face. Evil Dr. Porkchop is six inches tall and can turn his head.

This Toy Story action figure comes with three plastic 5¢ coins and you put a coin into the slot on his back, one at a time. Once a coin is in the slot, you push Porkchop's tail and it launches the coin into the air. It's really a lot of fun! The only thing you'll have to do is keep track of these coins after they spring into the air because it's been reported that they can hide under the sofa and other dark places where you can't find them so easily.

Toy Story Retro Slinky Dog

Modeled to look just like the popular toy from the 1950s, Toy Story Retro Slinky Dog is a pull-along toy with the springy Slinky body. His back legs wiggle to catch up to the rest of him when he's pulled and there is a string in between the Slinky spring that prevents the body from being too stretched out. One reviewer says that this string got all tangled with the rest of the toy, but it's the only review talking about such an instance. You can always cut that string if you don't like it. Some owners also don't like the string between his eye, they prefer it out of his chest and there's actually a small loop on the chest to put a string if you prefer it there instead.

Underneath each foot is a small wheel that helps Slinky Dog move along with you when you pull him.

One of the things you're really going to like about this toy is the packaging. It comes with one side looking like the original box from the 50s, so that will be fun look back at history.

Toy Story 3 Space Aliens 3 Pack

You're not going to find a more accurate replica of these "little green men" as Buzz Lightyear likes to call them. Like all the Toy Story action figures by Thinkway, these Space Aliens have film accurate paint details and sculpting using original Pixar data files. Impressive!

The packaging is really cool; each alien peeks through a round window and it has a blue space age theme with the Pizza Planet logo on the side. You also get a certificate of authenticity with this purchase. Each of these alien Toy Story action figures has a different facial expression and body gesture; they look fantastic when they are grouped together. From the tip of the antenna to their feet, these aliens measure about 6 inches tall, more true to the movie in terms of height.

The only real disappointment about these Toy Story action figures is that they don't squeak! However, some parents certainly don't mind that as they feel like the fewer noisy toys around the house, the better. These particular Space Aliens are actually made of more durable hard plastic and aren't squeezable like the ones you see in the Toy Story movies; they're more like little statues. While not fragile, they have been known to break on occasion with little kids, so they may be more suitable for adult collectors.

Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead

Playskool Toy Story 3 Classic Mr. Potato Head

While not technically what you think of when it comes to Toy Story action figures, you've got to include the Potato Heads in your collection. This is the classic Mr. Potatohead by Playskool who looks just like the cynical character in the Toy Story movies. He comes with all of these accessories: a pair of glasses, derby hat, 2 ears, pair of shoes, teeth, 2 noses as well as 1 set of eyebrows, a tongue, mustache, 2 arms and 2 sets of eyes. He's gotten positive 4-star reviews and you can get Mr. Potato Head for a good price here.

Playskool Toy Story 3 Classic Mrs. Potato Head

Unfortunately Mrs. Potato Head has not received as much praise as her husband. The features on this toy don't look quite like the Mrs. in the Toy Story movies: her nose is too long and wide and the eyes don't look much like her either. She does come with all the accessories, but there isn't a whole lot of creative rearranging of her features you'd expect. She's gotten only 3½ stars and while The Leaping Lamp does not officially recommend this toy, you can still check out Mrs. Potato Head right here and decide if she's the one for you.

Toy Story Bucket o Soldiers

This is another Toy Story Collection by Thinkway that is a high quality product with inspiring packaging. The bucket is the classic red, white and blue, very patriotic looking, and this set also comes with the certificate of authenticity. There are 72 soldiers with different poses and two of these soldiers have parachutes. The Bucket o Soldiers Toy Story action figures are made with nice quality durable plastic and the product detail in the sculpture of these army men looks really good. Just be mindful of the paratroopers parachute strings so that they don't get tangled up when you put them away.

You are going to love the Bucket o Soldiers, and so do most customers who have bought this item. It has earned a 4½-star rating with parents saying that these soldiers are not made with the cheap plastic that tends to have sharp edges. You can buy your Bucket o Soldiers right here.

Toy Story Zurg Figure

Unfortunately, finding quality Emperor Zurg Toy Story action figures isn't easy to do. Sure, there are some of these Zurg figures out there, but they have one and two-star ratings for poor quality and lack of durability. I cannot and will not recommend shoddy products, but I will recommend the good ones to you.

Toy Story Deluxe Zurg Action Figure

One Emperor Zurg figure that has gotten a four star review is this Toy Story Deluxe Zurg Action Figure by Mattel. He is a large-scale stylized action figure that says key phrases from Toy Story 2. Right now this toy is a hot item and there aren't many of them, so it's rather expensive. But if you want to splurge on the ultimate Toy Story Zurg figure, then you can buy him here.

Chase 'N' Attack Zurg

The only other Emperor Zurg figure with a four star rating or higher is the Chase 'N' Attack Zurg. This action figure is 6" tall and it has a pull-back and release feature that propels the toy forward. He rolls forward just like in the movies! This Toy Story Zurg figure can be bought here.

Construct a Zurg

And while technically not one of the Toy Story action figures, you might be interested in this LEGO Disney Construct a Zurg Exclusive Special Edition Set. This set has 118 pieces and it comes with the yellow ball gun. This Zurg toy has no ratings yet but it is far less expensive than the two action figures above and you can buy it for a 61% discount!
