Pixar's WALL-E:
An Array of Charming Robots & People

Most all the robots in WALL-E have names which are acronyms. They sound cute on their own, but it's interesting to learn what each letter of the names stands for. There are some characters whose names are not mentioned in the movie, but you get to learn them on The Leaping Lamp.

WALL-E is a Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth (Class)
The lead character of this film has binocular eyes that focus like a camera lens. Between his eyes is a hot torch to cut through steel. He has a compacting yellow square body that is empty inside to put the garbage in and compact. His hands are three fingered in a shovel shape and his wheels are all-terrain treads, and he keeps a supply of spare parts from defunct robots.

While humans were exiled into space, the WALL-E robots would compact the overabundance of garbage dumped all over Earth and huge incinerators would burn it. However, Operation Clean Up was deemed a failure and humans were to remain in space indefinitely. The WALL-E robots were shut down, but somehow one remained active, our main character.

WALL-E continues his day to day directive, going out each day after recharging his solar battery to compact trash. He has become sentient over last 700 years; he has feelings and shows curiosity and compassion for others. His only friend is a cockroach he named Hal.

His curiosity leads him to collect odds and ends that he finds interesting while out compacting garbage. His most prized possession is a VHS copy of the musical Hello Dolly. He always listens to "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" to put him in a good mood and to learn to dance. The scene from the song,It Only Takes a Moment teaches WALL-E how to hold hands and express love, but because he has nobody to hold hands with, he becomes lonely.

Later when a spaceship lands on Earth, he meets EVE, a probe sent back to evaluate the soil and look for plant life. WALL-E falls in love with EVE and follows her everywhere. She eventually warms up to WALL-E and comes with him to his home when a dust storm blows through.

They play together with his knick knacks and he tries to hold her hand, but she doesn't understand. She's fixated on a lighter. So he shows her the plant he found while he was working earlier that day.

EVE scans it and immediately goes into automation, retrieving the plant into her cavity and shutting down with a homing device beeping. WALLˇE does what he can to activate her again, including taking her into the sun to "recharge" like he does. Nothing works, so he stays by her side, taking good care of her and taking her out on "dates" with him.

The ship returns for EVE and WALLˇE hangs onto the hull of the ship, not wanting to let EVE go. He travels back to the starliner, the Axiom and manages to stay with EVE until they get to the Captain's bridge.

Both robots go through many trials and tribulations aboard the Axiom as they work together to get the plant into the holo-detector of the ship and bring it back to Earth to re-colonize.

WALL-E is severely damaged in the process and back on Earth EVE repairs him with his spare parts, but it does no good. WALL-E seems to have forgotten who he is and all about EVE. In one last attempt, EVE takes his hand and gives him a kiss, and that works the magic. WALL-E "wakes up" and remembers everything.

They go together to help mankind rebuild.

EVE is an Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator
EVE is a probe droid sent to Earth to scan the landscape for any signs of plant life. EVE is a beautiful, technologically advanced, egg-shaped droid. She has a black screen face and blue LED eyes that change shape with her emotions. EVE has levitating pivot points such as her fingers, arms and head when she's not compact. One of her arms serves as a quasar ion cannon and EVE can gracefully fly at high speeds.

When WALL-E shows EVE the plant he found, her body goes into automation, securing the plant inside her body and shutting down. Her only directive is to find plant life and return it to the starliner Axiom.

Together they go through many obstacles in their way to get the plant into the holo-detector so that the Axiom can return to Earth. During this time, EVE learns to love WALLˇE, especially when she sees how he cared for her when she shows the video of her time on Earth to Captain McCrea.

In turn, EVE cares greatly for WALL-E, rescuing him after he was electrocuted by AUTO, smashed in the giant WALL-A garbage compactors and squished when he keeps the holo-detector up for the plant. EVE helps restore WALL-E when they go back to Earth and is brokenhearted when he seems to have lost his memory. But when he comes to, EVE is overjoyed and they live happily ever after.

Captain B. McCrea
The lone commander of the BnL starliner Axiom, Captain McCrea has been in charge of the vessel from 2775 to 2805. Like his fellow passengers aboard the Axiom, Captain McCrea has succumbed to the effects of microgravity and automated service by suffering bone loss and becoming obesely fat.

But when EVE is opened and no plant is to be found, he sends her to the repair ward. Before leaving, though, Captain McCrea meets WALL-E. They shake hands and the robot leaves some dirt on McCrea's hand. He has the soil analyzed on the ship's computer and he begins learning about Earth. McCrea quickly becomes fascinated about the Earth and the customs, asking question after question.

EVE later returns with the missing plant, after GO-4 had stolen it and attempted to put it on an escape pod set for self destruction. Auto refused to let the Captain proceed with the plan, and McCrea demanded to know why. Auto revealed the Directive A113, showing Shelby Forthright, the CEO of BnL that Operation Cleanup was a failure. All ships must stay in space and never return to Earth.

Captain McCrea demands to know when this directive was issued and Auto responds that it was 700 years ago. McCrea insists that times are different now, that the Earth can, by now, sustain life, as was proof in the plant's existence. McCrea finally asserts his authority and firmly states that they are going home. Unable to disobey the directive, Auto stages a munity and confines Captain McCrea to his quarters.

Inside his room, Captain McCrea fiddles with the electrical wires and is able to direct EVE to the holo-detector on the Lido Deck. McCrea also tricks Auto into believing that McCrea has the plant, and Auto comes after him. They engage in battle with McCrea bringing up the holo-detector, and Auto closing it, crushing WALL-E.

At this, Captain McCrea finds the strength to stand on his own and he switches Auto's button to Manual, deactivating him. He pilots the ship back to Earth during the hyper-jump and takes a leadership role in teaching the people about farming and caring for the Earth.

AUTO is shortened from Autopilot
Auto is the main "bad guy" who is a robot designed as the starship's helm, or steering wheel and to assist the captain in his or her duties. In the movie, Auto takes over most of Captain McCrea's duties due to his obesity. Auto also secretly upholds Directive A113, which was a command to no longer return to Earth

Auto's red eye in the middle of the wheel is a direct reference to the computer who ran the space station in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Both Auto and Hal shared a secret directive to carry out regardless of the circumstances surrounding humans at that time.
